Sitting – The #1 Core Destroyer
Have you noticed that most of our activities require us to be in the seated position? Do you sit more than 50% of the day? If the answer is yes than it is likely you are punishing your core. Every joint and muscle position involved in sitting pulls your ‘core’ out of proper posture and balance. With that in mind, think of what a sit-up does to body position. The true ‘core’ of your body refers to the complex of your low spine, pelvis and hips. The core is your center of gravity and it provides a stable base for the whole body to move correctly. When you sit, the whole core complex is pulled out of position and not used. This position, along with training only your ab muscles, creates a forward rounded posture, tight hamstrings, tight hips and a recipe for back problems. A problem in any part of the core complex is a direct result of altered skeletal movement, muscle tone, muscle balance and muscle weakness. Therefore, a strictly localized back problem does not exist.
Proper body function requires the core to be balanced, flexible and strong… and does not include a rock hard six pack. Get up out of that seated position as musch as possible, walk, stretch, get adjusted and have a simple core exercise routine to keep your back and butt muscles active. Think about opening the body up and not closing it down.
